How to choose a web design agency in Sydney: 10 questions to ask
By Kunal Kapoor, Founder, WES Agency Co. ·
Sydney has hundreds of web design agencies and freelancers, and from the outside most of their websites say similar things. The differences show up in the answers to a few specific questions, ideally before you sign anything.
1. Can I see live websites you've built?
Mockups and screenshots are easy to polish. Live sites show you how the work actually performs: how fast it loads on your phone, how easy it is to find information and how it holds up months after launch. Ask for links, then click around.
2. Who will actually build my website?
At some agencies, the person you meet isn't the person doing the work, and projects pass through several hands. That isn't automatically bad, but you should know who's responsible for design, development and SEO, and who you'll talk to when something needs changing.
3. Will I own the domain, the website and the accounts?
Your domain name, hosting account, Google Business Profile, analytics and Search Console should be in your name, or at least transferable to you. Ask directly what happens if you part ways: can you take the site with you, or does it only exist on the agency's platform?
4. Is SEO part of the build, or an extra?
Basic technical SEO (fast pages, correct titles and headings, clean URLs, a sitemap, structured data) should be built in, not sold later as an add-on. Ongoing SEO work like content and link building is reasonably a separate service, but the foundations shouldn't be.
5. If I already have a site, how will you protect my rankings?
If the answer doesn't mention redirects and keeping content that ranks, keep asking. A redesign done without a redirect plan is one of the most common ways businesses lose search traffic overnight. We've written a full redesign checklist on this.
6. What platform will you use, and why?
WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Webflow and custom-coded sites all have trade-offs. A good agency can explain why they're recommending one for your business specifically, not just that it's what they always use.
7. What's the realistic timeline?
Ask what the timeline depends on. Most delays come from content and feedback, so a clear process for both is a better sign than an optimistic launch date.
8. What will it cost after launch?
Hosting, domain renewals, software licences, maintenance and support can add up. Get the ongoing costs in writing alongside the build quote, so there are no surprises in year two.
9. How are revisions and changes handled?
How many rounds of revisions are included? How are small changes after launch charged? Clear answers here prevent most client-agency friction.
10. Do you guarantee first-page Google rankings?
This one's a test. Nobody controls Google's rankings, so a guaranteed position is a red flag. A trustworthy agency will explain what it will do, how it measures results and what's realistic for your market.
